Solid Hardwood

Local Tile Co. in Shelburne, Ontario, is Dufferin County’s premier destination for high-end, authentic solid wood flooring. While mass-market retail chains push thin veneers and cheap imports, we specialize in premium, Canadian-grown and Canadian-manufactured solid timber that provides a lifetime of warmth, beauty, and structural value to your home.
Solid wood is the permanent gold standard of flooring. Because it is milled from a single, solid piece of local timber, it can be sanded and refinished multiple times over many decades, making it an enduring investment in your property.

Our Signature Flagship Floor: On-Site Sand, Stain & Finish
While we offer factory pre-finished options, our absolute favorite way to build a floor is our premium, artisan approach: 4 ¼” wide raw, square-edge solid hardwood boards, fully installed, sanded, and custom-stained directly on your site.
    • The “Zero-Bevel” Advantage: Standard pre-finished boards have V-grooves (bevels) on the edges to hide subfloor imperfections. These bevels act as traps for dust and dirt. Our raw, square-edge boards are installed tight and sanded completely flat on-site. This results in a flawless, monolithic, and smooth surface that is incredibly easy to clean.
    • Infinite Refinishing Longevity: Because a square-edge floor is perfectly flat, future generations will not have to sand deep into the wood just to remove old bevel grooves. This preserves the maximum thickness of your hardwood, making it significantly easier and cheaper to resand decades down the road.
    • Bespoke On-Site Color Matching: No more guessing what a factory sample will look like under your home’s unique lighting. By staining on-site, we can sample custom stains directly on your raw wood floor before the final coats go down, giving you total control over the finished look.

The Premium Canadian Solid Wood Advantage
We source our solid flooring from the finest slow-growing local timber, built specifically to thrive in our distinct regional climate:
    • Acclimated to Ontario Winters: Cheap, imported solid wood is often dried to moisture levels meant for tropical climates. When exposed to a dry Ontario winter furnace, imports shrink, crack, and warp. Our Canadian-milled timber is precision-dried right in the kiln to hit the perfect moisture baseline for Canadian homes, ensuring maximum structural stability year-round.
    • The Toughest Industrial Pre-Finishes: If your project timeline requires pre-finished boards, our curated collections feature an elite 7-coat factory finish system. This heavy-duty clear coat acts as a rock-hard shield against everyday scratches, pet claws, and heavy foot traffic.

Tailor-Made For Your Space
With over 40 custom colors and distinct grading combinations available, we build your floor to match your exact structural and design needs.
    • Plank Width Options: While our absolute flagship size is the beautiful, balanced 4 ¼” wide plank, we can also source traditional 2 ¼” and 3 ¼” layouts. We can special-order up to 5 ¼” wide boards, but please note that this specific size is significantly tougher to source and depends heavily on current Canadian mill availability.
    • Premium Local Species: Select from a beautiful line-up of robust Canadian hardwoods, including classic White Oak, Red Oak, Hard Maple, and Ash, or distinct choices like Rustic Maple, Walnut, Hickory, Cherry, and Elm.
    • Specialty Custom Pine: Looking for that timeless, warm, rustic country look? We can even source traditional Pine upon request for custom character-filled projects.
    • Lumber Grade: Choose a clean, uniform Select Grade for a sleek modern space, or a character-rich Rustic Grade to showcase beautiful, natural wood knots throughout your floor.
    • Custom Texturing (Wire-Brushed/Distressed): Add a gorgeous, tactile feel to your space with a custom distressed finish. Running a specialized wire brush over heavy-grained species like Ash, Red Oak, and White Oak pulls out the deep, natural patterns of the timber for an incredible textured look.

Crucial Ordering & Planning Timelines
Because our premium solid timber is custom-manufactured and a living material, a successful installation requires strategic planning. Keep these three rules in mind when mapping out your project timeline:
    1. Order Months in Advance (The Milling Window): Do not wait until your drywall is up to pick your floors. It is best to place your order months before you actually need it just in case the mill has to custom-run your specific lumber species, grade, and width combinations.
    2. The 2-Week Climatization Phase: Real wood reacts to its environment. Your new solid timber must sit inside your home for a minimum of 2 weeks to acclimatize before a single board is fastened down. This must take place in a fully enclosed, heated space where the furnace or AC is actively running. (Note: Solid wood should never be stored or installed in cold, damp basements).
    3. Waste Margin Calculations: We recommend adding a minimum of 5% waste margin for standard layouts. If your space requires complex diagonal cuts, or if you are doing a custom on-site stain color, factor in a 10% waste margin so you don’t run out of material midway through the process.
